Rapid release of fears and anxieties and replacing them with positive thoughts

One of my dilemmas as a general practitioner has been in treating patients with anxiety.  Normally by the time that an anxious patient presents to a doctor the anxiety has become so severe that it is distressing and disabling. They usually not only need counselling and emotional support but they also  need  some immediate relief of  their distress.  In the past I may have prescribed a short  course of tranquillisers such as Valium or Xanax. This was always a worry because the side effects  of these drugs could also be disabling with drowsiness and dulling of the senses.  There was also the added potential problem of overuse and addiction.

When I came across the Meridian Based Therapies I was at first quite dubious and sceptical but out of desperation I decided to try them.  I was stunned at the results.  Many patients with severe anxieties gained immediate relief and many were able to transform their lives,  releasing their fears and worries and starting to live anew.

The Meridian Based Therapies are simple, powerful and effective tools to help dissipate anxieties and fears which are completely free of side effects.  They are able to be used time and time again with an accumulative effect.  Basically it is a form of emotional acupuncture but instead of using needles they use gentle finger tapping whilst saying powerful affirmations.

The Meridian Based Therapy that I now use is called the Vibrational Alignment Tool or VAT for short.

I personally use VAT all the time when I feel emotionally distressed or anxious.  There is no need to wait until an anxiety or fear becomes intense.  Any anxiety or fear is a warning that something is out of harmony in your life.  It is a useful sign to quickly recognise and act upon.

I also use VAT professionally all the time with anxious patients, to the extent that I now rarely prescribe tranquillisers.  It is particularly effective with phobias and  I have even been able to help many patients addicted to tranquillisers to wean themselves off the drugs.  It is so easy to teach the technique that the patient can immediately take it home and start to use it on a regular basis.

Even more importantly is that the benefit gained using this technique will persist.

A.   TO REMOVE FEARS AND ANXIETIES

The first step is to clearly identify the fear or anxiety that is distressing you.  It  might be obvious,  eg. a fear of snakes / a fear of failing an exam / a fear of a child getting injured/ a fear of losing a job or being able to survive after losing a job / anxiety of losing a relationship.

If it is not obvious then you may need a little quiet time to focus.  Sit quietly for a while, close your eyes and take some deep breathes.  Start to think the thoughts that distress you and vocalise them.   Say them out loud and then write them down.  The clearer you can identify the anxiety the more effective  VAT will be.  There may be many distressing thoughts so write them all down.  They can all be dealt with.

Emotional Intensity Meter (EIM): In order to get a reliable subjective indication of the effectiveness of VAT use this simple process to quantify the intensity of your present anxiety.  Begin by closing your eyes and imagining a meter running up your spine.  If 10 is a high emotional intensity (feeling strongly upset, even panicky) and 1 is a low emotional intensity (only mild, low emotional charge) estimate what would your current level for each anxiety or fear would be?  Write down this number now.

The second step is to do the tapping.  Study the diagram of all the points to be tapped

1. TH = Top of Head - centre top of the skull (use your whole palm to tap here)

2. EB = Eye Brow - the area where the brow ends above the nose

3. BE = Beside Eye - on the side, aligned with the outside edge of the eye

4. UE = Under Eye - the flat bony part directly beneath the eye

5. UN = Under Nose - between the upper lip and  base of the nose

6. CC = Chin Crease - centre of chin, on the crease

7. LF  = Little Finger - on the side next to the 4th finger, tapping at the base of the nail on the cuticle

8. IF   =  Index Finger -  on the side next to the thumb, tapping at the base of the nail on the cuticle

9. KC =  Karate Chop Point - midway along the outside edge of the hand

10. CB = Collar Bone Points - on each side, in the indentation just below each collar bone (place index finger in the centre hollow, then move about 1.5 inches to each side, just beneath the collarbone curve)

Having clearly identified the fear or anxiety that you want to remove start to pat the Top of Head (TH) point with your palm while repeating the following three statements:

“It is only natural that I have this (say the fear or anxiety) but I am ready to let it go now.”

“I deserve to be free of this (say the fear or anxiety) and I am ready to let it go now”

“There is no good reason for me to keep this (say the fear or anxiety) and I am ready to let it go now”

Continue with your tapping, using two or three fingers, on the rest of the VAT points (in the order from the top down is recommended) while repeating the statement:

“I am now releasing this (say the feeling)”.

Tap each point rapidly about 6 times and after each point has been tapped, pause whilst pressing on the point and take a deep, slow breath ….. in through the nose and out through the mouth.  Then continue on to the next point.

Once you have completed the therapy pause and revisit the Emotional Intensity Meter (EIM).  What is the new intensity of anxiety.  Write it down.  Commonly an anxiety will drop from a high level to very low level.

You can repeat the whole process again and the EIM level will drop even further.  The best thing is that the level will stay down.

B.  TO REPLACE THE FEAR OR ANXIETY WITH A POSITIVE THOUGHT

Rather that just release an anxiety or fear, it is even more powerful to replace it with a positive thought.  In a garden if you pull out the weeds and leave the garden bed bare then new weeds will grow.  Instead, if after weeding you plant the garden bed with flowers, they will flourish and prevent new weeds growing.  So it is with our minds.

Firstly think what positive thought you would like to replace the fear or anxiety with?

Eg. if you had a terrible fear of spiders you might like to replace the fear with the thought  spiders will no longer have any emotional charge for me”.  If your anxiety was that you would fail an exam you may want to replace it with  I shall find the exam to be relaxed and effortless”.   If you are anxious that you have lost your job and will not cope you may wish to replace the fear with “new and wonderful  opportunities will now come to me that I would have missed had I been in my last job”.

Emotional Intensity Meter (EIM): In order to get a reliable subjective indication of the effectiveness of VAT use this simple process to quantify the present intensity positive thought.  Begin by closing your eyes and imagining a thermometer running up your spine.  If 10 is a high emotional intensity (in this case feeling the positive emotion strongly) and 1 is a low emotional intensity (very little positive feeling) what would your current level be?  Write down this number now.

The next step is to do the tapping. (Refer to the above diagram again for all the points).  Having clearly identified  the positive feeling, begin patting firmly on the Top of The Head (TH)  while repeating the following statements:

“It is only natural that I have not been feeling (say the positive feeling) but I am ready to feel it and experience it now.”

“I deserve to feel (say the positive feeling) and I am ready to feel it and experience it now”

“There is no good reason for me not to feel (say the positive feeling) I am ready to feel it and experience it now”

Now continue with your finger tapping (6-8 times) on the rest of the VAT points (in order from the top down is recommended but only so you can keep track) while repeating :

“I am now feeling (say the positive feeling)”.

Tap each point rapidly about 6 times and after each point has been tapped, pause whilst pressing on the point and take a deep, slow breath ….. in through the nose and out through the mouth.  Then continue on to the next point.

Once you have completed the therapy,  pause and revisit the Emotional Intensity Meter (EIM).  What is the new intensity of the positive thought?  Write it down.  Commonly the intensity will have risen from a very low level to a high level.  You can repeat the whole process again and the EIM level will rise even further.
