 Feeling good about yourself

I believe self esteem and acceptance is crucial for our good health and happiness.  I see so much disease manifest itself because of low self esteem.  So many of our emotional problems emanate from us trying to be the person we think we should be, or even the person that others think we should be,  rather than who we really are.  Learning self acceptance, that we are completely OK just as we are now, warts and all, is an ongoing process that we need to give attention to.

But it's not surprising  that we think that we are inferior when we consider all the pressures and advertising to which we are exposed every day of our lives.
As infants and young children we are subject to so many comments, often throw-away remarks by people near to us, that make us feel stupid, "no good", useless or ugly.  At such a young age, when we are naive and lacking life experience, we do not realise they are often not meant or just said in anger.  They become imprinted in our psyche to create false beliefs that cloud our thinking and taint our view of life.  This will occur especially if the message is very hurtful, if it is constantly repeated or if it is experienced when we are particularly vulnerable.
Eventually we become so use to being made wrong that we become our own worst critic, putting ourselves down before someone else will.  Other people's criticism only reinforces what we now believe to be true!
Adverts compound our self doubt for they are usually designed to make us feel inadequate and lacking so that we feel the need to do or buy something that will make it "all right".

Is it not surprising, therefore, that low self esteem has become a major social problem, leading to widespread unhappiness and  dissatisfaction, and fuelling an epidemic of depression and anxiety.

To counter these effects we need to learn that we are OK, no matter what we look like, what we eat, whatever our job, no matter what we possess.  We need to know that we have all our own power, all our own answers within us.  We need to realise that our feelings need to be honoured and that our emotions are just information and do not rule us.  We need to believe that we are able to follow our own journey and do not have to cling to other people’s agendas or choose ways because of fear or self doubt.

"The great teachings unanimously emphasize that all the peace, wisdom, and joy in the universe are already within us; we don't have to gain, develop, or attain them. We're like a child standing in a beautiful park with his eyes shut tight. We don't need to imagine trees, flowers, deer, birds, and sky; we merely need to open our eyes and realize what is already here, who we really are."   -   Author Unknown

Our self esteem is vital to our well-being. I have written these poems to clarify and confirm my own feelings and to help my children and friends.  I hope they will help you too.

Take some time and read some of these poetic prescriptions:

everyone is special    ........... everyone, yes everyone, is special and unique

i am not my story  ...............  learn to be just you

i am an apple   ...................... don't try to be what you're not

dormant seeds  ....................  grow as tall as you can

do an act of kindness  ..........one of the most difficult things to give away is kindness for it usually returns

it's all in your mind .................. create your own reality by changing your beliefs

to forgive  ................................ forgiveness releases the anger we hold within that poisons us
