 bodily thanks

Your heart thanks you for using the stairs,

A chance that you should seize,

To let it pump and work a bit,

Preventing heart disease.

Your lungs thank you for not smoking,

Avoiding bad aromas,

And keeping clean the bronchioles,

Avoiding carcinomas.

Your liver thanks you for moderation,

To take alcohol in small doses.

Too much will poison and pollute

Causing damage and cirrhosis.

Your weight thanks you for good foods,

Balanced and low fat,

To keep the waistline in control

And your tummy flat.

Your muscles thank you for exercise

Taken every day

To keep you strong and supple through

So you can run and play.

Your mind thanks you for meditation

Allowing free expression

And not be tied to dull routine

That leads to deep depression.

We create our own good health

By doing what we should.

Respect yourself and take self care

So you’ll stay feeling good

the doctor’s thoughts .....

Our bodies do need to be looked after.  I have fallen into some bad habits at times in my life.  I smoked cigarettes from about 15 years of age but managed to stop when I was 25.  When under pressure I use to drinking too much alcohol which  numbed the discomfort of denial.  I have a terrible sweet tooth that can lead to binges of chocolate.  Exercise has often been lacking and my diet can go off the rails especially when travelling when the fast  convenient or rich restaurant foods dominate.  I wrote this poem to remind myself what is important so that I would revert to a regular and robust lifestyle.  When I waver I stick it on the fridge door to act as my conscience.
