gratitude
We are surrounded by possessions galore
Which we push it to one side and want more,
We’re told that we need it, by adverts that feed it,
Yet whatever we own, we still feel poor.
Even if we feel that we don’t have a lot,
Wouldn’t it be great to be happy with what we’ve got?
When we see our neighbours buy something new.
We immediately feel jealous and want to buy one too.
Though out of budget, on credit we’ll fudge it,
Despite being unwanted, with no real value.
Even if we feel we are not the most replete,
Wouldn’t it be great not always to compete?
To the world’s poor and starving we have become blind,
Yet I know we’re not uncaring, unfeeling or unkind.
But their terrible plight, is so far out of sight,
That it is easily ignored and pushed right out of mind.
Even if we think we are always stressed,
Wouldn’t it be great to know we’re truly blessed?
We work long and hard all our lives to survive
To only find it harder to progress and to thrive.
We get owned by the banks, we work hard with no thanks,
Struggling to feel that it’s worth being alive.
Even when we feel that our life’s a complication,
Wouldn’t it be great to live with appreciation?
For gratitude will lift us up and leave us feeling good,
Knowing we are lucky, and knowing that we should
Realise we always have enough of everything,
If we are content within and trust in our being.
