 Have Fun

I'd like to write a prescription
That’s never had bad side effects

To help stress of any description

To all races, classes and sex.

It’s totally free with no fault.

It’s simple for it will just say,

“Take life with a big pinch of salt

One, two, three, four times a day”.

For our lives are bustling with hustle,

Underpaid, overworked, overtaxed,

That stimulates spasm of muscle

Which are cured by being relaxed.

Yet I see tension headaches and chest pain,

Irritable bowel with diarrhoea,

Asthma, hypertension and migraine

Which out of the blue will appear.

These people all suffer from tension

Causing spasm that will so deform.

The symptoms enhance apprehension

So a downward spiral will form.

We need to escape from this pressure

With  moments of pleasure and fun

And allow our minds to be fresher

Avoiding  brains cooked  to well done.

My prescription has numerous potions.

Any fun that will so entertain

Or it may need to be a lotion

To inject in a jocular vein.

For to laugh will untie all the spasm.

It’s a natural tranquiliser.

And replenish the enthusiasm,

An energy synthesiser.

So have fun on a daily basis.

Don’t be a stick in the mud.

Have some daily “Red Faces”.

It will make you more understood.

Relax both your body and brain.

If you don’t it’s only your fault

For life is only a game.

So take it with a big pinch of salt.

I was not surprised when they made the film about Patch Adams, the American doctor who introduced humour into hospitals as a therapeutic tool.  Even I had noticed that people who have lots of fun are healthier than those who have no fun. Unfortunately as we lose our ability to have fun we begin to become resistant to the idea that fun is necessary and actually begin to avoid it. My children saved me from becoming a funless person. As babies they were able to break down my resistance and self consciousness about being silly and lightening up. Ben, my first son had the most infectious giggle. I could start him giggling with silly faces and sounds and once he started giggling I just collapsed with hilarity. Rolling on the floor with belly laughs, with tears of mirth flooding your face and clasping your tummy with spasms of laughter is great therapy and much healthier than tranquillisers. I love the comedians like Billy Connolly and Bill Cosby who can see the funny side to everyday living. Just listening to their recordings is great for your health.
