 mistakes

Everybody makes mistakes,

It’s part of all our growing.

They cause us grief and sad heartbreaks

Though we will gain by knowing.

For once mistakes are recognised

And you see you’ve gone astray,

You always can apologise

And then correct your ways.

For mistakes are most destructive

When unrecognised, covert,

As they will get repeated

And compound all the hurt.

And though mistakes may cause great cost,

Creating great concern,

In retrospect, the more is lost,

The more that you will learn.

So every time you make mistakes
Don’t feel you are defeated.

Thank the lesson that you make

So it won’t be repeated.

the doctor’s thoughts …..

“One of my greatest rewards as a doctor has been in helping people to appreciate and accept their mistakes.  In my years of palliative care, helping patients face terminal illness, it has been a real privilege to share their process of reflecting on how they lived their life.  Many of them dwell on the mistakes they have made with deep regret.  I often share a quote I once heard that gives great insight and comfort.  “Living is about making mistakes.  Dying is wishing you had made more.”

There is no room for regret for mistakes are a learning opportunity.  If we take chances we will make mistakes.  If we never take chances we will never learn and grow.  We do the best we can at the time and we need to be gentle with ourselves and forgive ourselves.

I consider myself an expert on this topic.  I have  made more than my share of mistakes, some  minor, some downright spectacular.  I have found that even the worst mistakes can be remedied if we have the courage to admit, to apologise and to sincerely make amends.

Seeing other people handle, forgive and accept their mistakes while learning to handle and forgive my own has inspired me to share this poem.”
