 ripples

Throw a pebble into a pond

And watch the ripples flow.

They expand out in a ring,

A widening halo.

But though they seem to disappear

And the wave is gone,

Their effect within the pond

Will travel on and on.

It is the same with our words and deeds

Which we so easy throw.

Their effect will reverberate,

Their influence will grow.

If they’re mean or underhand,

A ripple that annoys,

It forms a tidal wave of hurt

That savagely destroys.

But if it’s kind and thoughtful,

Generosity flowing wide,

This wave of good intention

Will swell the pond with pride.

So realise the consequence

Of your word or deed long gone.

Be considerate at all times

And let your goodness ripple on.

the doctor's thoughts ..........

Have you been hurt by someone else’s throwaway remark?  I know that I have,  on many occasions. I have also been amazed how my remarks come back and haunt me.  My children, now in their twenties, occasionally tell me how they were so hurt by things I said years ago,  things I no longer remember but which I know I did not mean.  The other side of this is when advice or support I gave did have a long term and beneficial effect. One young lady once told me how I had treated her depression ten years before when she was a senior school girl.   I had told her that she was special and unique and that she could achieve whatever she chose as long as it was set in her heart, she just had to discover her purpose and that it would come to her if she allowed it to happen. She told me that this one statement changed her life. She decided to follow her heart to be an actress and not go to university as her parents and school encouraged and expected. She was now a  well recognised TV star and still rising in her profession. I felt very humbled and astounded that my words had had such an important impact.
Everything we say and do affects others. It is especially relevant for our children and those close to us. We cannot predict the effect of even offhand remarks so we need to always try to be aware of others feelings and try to be generous of heart and considerate at all times.
