the game of success

The game of success can be very confusing

For power, position and wealth

Can commonly lead to you soon losing

Your integrity, humility and health.

For having great power can be well used

To further the good of humanity,

But power corrupts and is commonly abused

For ego and greed and profanity.

Being internationally famous sounds very romantic

A life of red carpets to tread,

But living in lime light is very pedantic

Swelling ego, import and head.

And wealth, so great, you have all you desire

Is what we all make our dream

But possession can own you and quickly backfire

Giving stresses and tensions extreme.

So before you play to gain riches and fame

Decide on the rules that you choose
For in winning success you may find the game
Reverses the rules and you lose.

the doctor’s thoughts .....

I wrote this poem to challenge each and everyone of us to define success.  I have seen so many people buy into the common cultural definition of success,  the external symbols of power, fame or wealth, only to be disappointed and disillusioned, often leading to depression.  It is not that power, fame or wealth are bad, far from it.  But if you hang your self worth and identity on to them, if you put all your hopes and expectations on them, if you let them rule your life, then you set yourself up for disappointment and even disaster.

I have treated many patients who look back on their lives with regret, wondering how they lost sight of the things that really matter, realising that they got caught up in the cultural expectation and drive for “success”.

Don’t wait any longer.  Stop now and truly define for yourself what successful living means to you, and then be willing to stand by your definition.  After all, being true to yourself is the most successful choice any of us can make.
