 the ladder of success

I want to climb the ladder,

The ladder of success.

I’d like to get right to the top

And be the boss, no less,

Because I’ll then be happy,

In charge of one and all.

I only hope this ladder

Leans up on the right wall.

I’d like to cross the jungle,

The jungle of my life,

By hacking out a path

With a machete long sharp knife.

Then I’ll travel faster,

Be efficient and not bungle.

I only hope I’m cutting

A path in the right jungle.

We are always in a  hurry,

A hurry to get “there”.

Yet often we don’t really know

What is “there” and where

It lies or why we want it,

Or what meaning we will find.

So always think before you start

And keep the end in mind

the doctor’s thoughts ..........

What wall have you leaned your ladder against?  I have seen numerous patients who have spent years doggedly pursuing a certain career path only to discover they when they attain the top, it falls short of expectations yet demands a stressful lifestyle that is unsustainable and unfulfilling.

Too often, once we are committed to a career and way of life and realise it is not meaningful to us, we are already so heavily invested financially, academically and time-wise that it feels impossible to change no matter how unhappy and dissatisfied we are.
I have found myself in this situation and realised that I had ignored all the warning signs,  I had not kept the end in mind.  I realised that I was so committed and invested that for  me  to  change I could not do it in increments, I had to make radical changes which affected my family and all those around me, and costed me heavily financially.  How much easier it would have been to have kept my eye on the ball and made small changes as I had progressed in life.
Where are you going?   What do you wish to achieve?  When you get it will you be satisfied?  And then what?
