Looking after ourselves is critical for a happy life. We advise and encourage all those we love to look after themselves .... to have good and balanced nutrition, to take regular exercise, to avoid toxic chemicals including nicotine, excessive alcohol, recreational drugs yet we don't follow oour advice. We do not seem to love ourselves enough. We form bad habits and addictions that numb our unhappiness, smoking, alcohol, marihuana, gambling, shopping. We all have some form of addiction at one time in our lives.
I have come to consider my body as my "earth suit "and use the analogy constantly. If you were an astonaut in space and had to wear a space suit every day to leave your space craft I am sure that you would be obsessive in its care and maintenance as any defect would have an immediate, serious and probably fatal consequence. There is no way that you would throw it around, stamp on it, leave it crumpled on the floor, pour corrosive liquids over it or fail to check it over for any minor faults. We would be following its daily maintenace obsessively. Yet we tend to ignore, mistreat and poison our "earth suits" every day. Just because the results are not immediate we fall into a complacency and false sense of safety.
Self care is critical for our happiness and I have written several poems to remind myself to keep it a priority in my life.
"Self-love, my liege, is not so vile a sin as self- neglect". - William Shakespeare
Take some time out and read one of these poetic prescriptions:
bodily thanks ......... ...................... a reminder of simple ways to look after your personal health
design your life ............................ don't wait until it's too late to do what is important
my life is like a kitchen fridge ..... don't get to the point of burnout and lose your cool
nurture number one ................... do you feel guilty if you take some time just for you?
sharpen the saw ........................... rest and renewal are vital for good health
what are you waiting for? ........don't wait for a major medical catastrophe before you change your lifestyle
